SK picglobal - KRICT, in partnership for green technology R&D
2022-05-01

  • The Agreement
on Mutual Cooperation for Eco-friendly, Low Carbon R&D was signed...for
collaborated R&D activities regarding green manufacturing process and new
    materials.

  • ESG
materials solutions for chemical business will be ensured through sustained
cooperation...contributing to the achievement of the ‘2040 Net Zero Greenhouse
    Gas’ _ object_ive.

SK
picglobal, a chemical business invested by SKC
(President: Woncheol Park) has partnered with the Korea Research Institute of
Chemical Technology (KRICT) for the research and development of process and
products that can lead to reduced greenhouse gas and contaminant emission.

This
partnership was achieved by the two institutions as they signed the Agreement
on Mutual Cooperation for Eco-friendly, Low Carbon R&D on April 29 at the KRICT
head office in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. Though this agreement, collaborative
efforts will be made between SK picglobal and KRICT such as technology
development for manufacturing process and waste water treatment in addition to eco-friendly
materials development using byproducts from manufacturing _ base_ materials. Attendees
at the signing ceremony included President Kidon Won of SK picglobal and President
Mihye Yi of KRICT.

Though
this cooperation, SK picglobal will develop a propylene glycol
(PG)
manufacturing process that will increase efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas
emission. PG is a high value-added material widely used for food, medical
supplies and cosmetic products. SK picglobal was the first in the world to
successfully commercialize the eco-friendly HPPO technology in 2008 and is now
a manufacturer of PG using propylene oxide (PO) produced with the HPPO
technology. This partnership will allow SK picglobal to produce even more
eco-friendly PG.

Also,
in order to increase the usability of SM produced from PO-SM
(styrene monomer) poly-generation which is available together with the
HPPO technology, eco-friendly application for SM will be developed to be used
as additives for food, medical supplies, etc. that are not harmful to the human
body. Following the business model innovation of product lineup expansion from
PO to PG in 2018, SK picglobal is setting out to develop a new technology in an
aim to improve SM usability this time.

In particular, collaborative efforts will be made
with KRICT to combine carbon dioxide with exiting products and develop new
materials that will assist in resolving the greenhouse gas issue. These efforts
will be aimed at achieving the 2040 Net Zero Greenhouse Gas _ object_ive announced
by SKC last year. SK picglobal further will be engaged in the co-development of
a new eco-friendly wastewater technology as well.

An
SK picglobal said, “This agreement on mutual technology R&D cooperation
with KRICT will serve as a basis on which we will develop a system for
continuous cooperation for various undertakings such as identifying new R&D
challenges,” and added, “Through this, we will have ESG materials solutions for
chemical business ready and contribute to the achievement of the 2040 Net Zero
Greenhouse Gas _ object_ive.” [End of _ document_]
