SKC introduces future mobility materials at CES2020

SKC (President Lee Wan-jae) has introduced its range of high value added, highly functional mobility materials at the CES 2020, currently being held in Las Vegas from January 7-10, with the aim of enhancing its status as a mobility materials business. The company regards mobility, along with semiconductors, displays, and pro-environment, as an axis for its future growth.


SKC, along with other affiliates of the SK Group (SK Innovation, SK Telecom, SK Hynix), is using the CES 2020 to promote its products under the theme “SK Creates the Future!” Making what is only its second attendance at the annual event after last year, the company will introduce its copper foil for EV batteries, a core material of “future mobility”; PCT film, a lightweight new material; transparent PI (polyimide) film, a future display material; and environmentally-friendly polyurethane for auto interiors.


The copper foil used in the cathodes of secondary batteries is a core material for mobility, as a thinner copper foil results in high-capacity, lightweight batteries. In fact, the thinner the battery copper foil, the more cathode-active materials can be inserted into a battery. Thus, the technology for producing thinner copper foil is more important than anything else. KCFT, which restarted as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SKC on January 7, boasts the world’s No.1 technological prowess in the production of copper foil, having succeeded in mass producing ultra-thin (4㎛ thick) copper foil.


SKC became the first business to commercialize a PCT film for use in the production of lightweight car materials. PCT film can not only withstand high temperatures, moisture, and alkaline substances, but is also a highly effective insulation material that is widely applied to cables in vehicles, 5G devices, among other industries. If FFC (Flat Flexible Cable) made of PCT film is used instead of a copper cable in a thick vehicle and a battery bus bar which holds its shape, the need for copper can be reduced by half, which results in lighter vehicles.


The transparent PI film can be applied into many diplays of future vehicles. As this film is break resistant like glass and can be folded and rolled, it is regarded as a crucial next-generation material for displays and car interiors. Having recently completed its transparent PI film production assembly line, SKC aims to start full-scale production in 2020.


SKC is also introducing NEXTYOL, an environmentally-friendly polyurethane car interior material with reduced VOC emissions which it produces under a joint venture with MCNS (Mitsui Chemicals & SKC Polyurethanes Inc.), and polyurethane goods that are effective in reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).


Commenting on the occasion, an SKC executive said, “We have prepared for “Deep Change” with the focus on materials related to mobility, semiconductors, displays, and environmentally-friendly materials. We are striving to be reborn as a business that provides future mobility solutions on the basis of continuous R&D.”
